When I love a book so much and want to talk about it on my podcast or videos, I like to immerse myself in the ideas of the book by listening to them explained in the author’s own words in his/her podcast interviews about the book or through book summaries on Blinkist app. This is what the author David Kadavy called “A Minimum Creative Dose” in his book “Mind management not time management”.
In his book, David explained the creative process so beautifully and said that when we couldn’t work on our creative project for some reason, we could at least stay in touch with it by reading articles about the topic or listening to books related to it every day i.e, commit to a minimum creative dose. This way, when we are ready to write about the topic, our minds would have marinated in the ideas for a while and the writing or the creative process, in general, would be easier and more insightful.
A recent success story I can share is when I was getting ready to talk about Digital Minimalism in my podcast at the end of 2020. I had already read the book twice, I shared about it in Instagram videos and I applied the challenge back in 2019. I wanted to share the ideas again in a podcast format so this time I decided to prepare for it by looking up Cal Newport’s podcast interviews about the book, putting them in a spotify playlist, and listening daily to stay in touch with the ideas and gain insights and make connections to my daily life up to the recording time, which, I am happy to report, was done so smoothly with limited need for notes reading, because my daily minimum creative dose habit massively helped me prepare for it.
Thank you David for this idea, it’s been one of the most helpful things I learned and implemented recently.
